VC's Welcome Message
It is both a privilege and an honor to serve as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Gitwe—a growing institution with deep roots in community service, academic excellence, and transformative education.
As I assume this vital leadership role, I am inspired by the dedicated efforts of my predecessors and the unwavering commitment of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The future of higher education—particularly in health sciences, education, computing, and technology—demands bold vision, innovative thinking, and responsive leadership. I am committed to providing the kind of forward-looking guidance that meets these expectations and ensures the continued growth and relevance of our university.
While the challenges and opportunities ahead may differ from those of the past, our guiding principles remain the same: dedication to high-impact, community-driven science and education; accountability and transparency in decision-making; and a deep-seated commitment to national development and global engagement.
At the heart of my vision is the revitalization of key academic pillars:
•The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, with its central role in Rwanda’s health system, will continue to expand its training capacity, practical exposure, and research to meet national and regional healthcare needs.
•The Faculty of Education will be strengthened to produce not just teachers, but change-makers who inspire innovation and critical thinking in Rwanda’s basic and secondary education sectors.
•The Faculty of Computing will be a cornerstone of digital transformation, equipping our students with skills in software development, data science, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, in line with Rwanda’s vision for a knowledge-based economy.
•The Proposed Faculty of Medicine, now undergoing reengineering and revitalization under my leadership, will offer a comprehensive, context-sensitive, and community-aligned medical education that responds to the pressing health challenges in Rwanda and beyond.
As Vice Chancellor, I envision a university that not only imparts knowledge but generates it—a university that:
•Provides strong academic and scientific leadership across all its faculties.
•Promotes scientific inquiry and innovation, addressing real-world problems through interdisciplinary collaboration.
•Modernizes and standardizes induction, training, monitoring, and evaluation for undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
•Creates forums for open, continuous dialogue between the university, the community, and scientific stakeholders—nationally and internationally.
•Forges strong linkages with government institutions, health bodies, and global academic partners to drive research, training, and policy development.
•Encourages programmatic and translational research aligned with Rwanda’s development goals, particularly in areas such as Clinical Informatics, Public Health, Education Technology, and Data Sciences.
As an educator, I believe that education must be both intellectually rigorous and socially responsive. My research experiences continue to inform my leadership. They remind me that behind every policy, every paper, and every program, there is a human life, a family, a community.
With the blessings of God Almighty, and guided by the aspirations of our students, alumni, and partners, I look forward to working with the entire Gitwe community to chart a bold, inclusive, and sustainable path forward.
